Small things we can conserve

The smallest things to save
Conservation is an important recurring and readily available responsibility that everyone can take part in. We are oblivious to the small things around us with which we can conserve a lot. Conservation of resources and energy has become really important today. We all need to chip in little by little to be able to conserve the dwindling resources that we have.
Many of us have also become excessively affluent in the use of the smallest and simplest things. Electricity for instance is something that we often use at our leisure. We forget to switch off the lights in the kitchen, we forget to switch off the fans and the air-conditioners. Air con is a major source of power consumption and pollution. Besides that we also need to switch to a solar water heating system for homes in most places where there is more than 4 hours of sunlight regularly.
The use of power saving lighting equipment should also be inculcated even in offices. They offer the same or even better quality of lighting at a much lower consumption of power. Switching off appliances, gadgets and other electrical equipment post use is very important as it helps save up on a lot of power.
Water is also wasted in huge quantities in most of our homes and it goes unnoticed most of the time. A dripping tap alone can be used over a day to provide water to at least one person. We also use up a lot of water for our own purposes without sparing a thought towards the people who don't even have access to safe and clean water.
Paper and plastic are also two things that we can save up on easily. Reuse poly bags as often as you can and don’t ask for a poly bag every time you buy something. A lot many of us buy two or three things and ask for a polythene bag to carry it while it can easily be carried by hand. Carry your own bag if you are going out shopping. Save on paper by using it as sparingly as possible. Don’t throw away paper that you get with packages, even card board boxes can be used for a lot of purposes. Save up on paper and then sell it, even the people who recycle paper and bottles pay some amount of money for them both, instead of making it unusable, try and recycle as often as possible.
Walk instead of riding your bike to go places less than two kilometers. It is surprising how most of us prefer the bike or the car over walking even the smallest of distances, adding to the growing usage of fuel. If it is not necessary, then it is better not to use it. This is one of the basic things that we should learn about conservation, using things only to the point of our needs and not extravagantly using even the simplest of resources are some very important basic steps towards contributing to conserve in our own little ways.

  1. If one just thinks & reads about it a little, just for 10 mins in your entire a large amount of resources can be saved. An example to cite: While washing utensils, water used to clean once utensil could be used to for preliminary cleaning of other utensils before finally throwing it away. A similar practice could be followed while washing clothes.

    Just a little thought.
