With the recent case of the Delhi gang rape the double standards of the society has again come to the forefront. India basically follows this ideal: Crime-protests-arrest-bail-no one cares- after one month no one even asks- repeat. And this is what exactly happened after the barbarous crime that took place in December 2012. There were vigorous protests with society( read only women and some radical men too) promising to change but voila! such crimes are still on rise. What is worth thinking is such occurrences were already happening in the society, the awakening took place only after a girl sacrificed her life brutally and what is more saddening is the fact that such things are still on rise. The main problem lies with the fact that people forget and are too busy to change perspectives. The girl died and in a way we all killed her. How? In a society like ours we claim that we respect people but we don't. Be it a man or a woman we always value our own thinking more than the others. What further amuses and bewilders me is the fact that people who cant use a slang without prefixing mother or sister in-front celebrate women's day and claim to respect women. What are we? Semi-gods or something? like seriously? Society wont change with protests and marches.
What we need is the change of mindset. With too many pseudo feminists bashing men and too many chauvinists doing the same nothing is going to change. The solution however does not only lie in criticizing, we need to question ourselves as to what we are doing to bring the change that we are shouting for. Sitting in-front of the computer and becoming a rebel only till the topic is hot is definitely not going to help. Like they say charity starts at home, respecting people and opinions should also start from home but that however also does not mean that one should lose their own individualism and adhere to anything that inclines towards misanthropy and misogyny. Here i am not preaching or saying that i have never done anything wrong in my life. We are humans and we make mistakes, claiming to be a great proponent of change and not doing anything to bring that change is a double standard display. The least that we can do is to change ourselves for a better cause to remove gender disparities. I don't know how many of you will agree to the same but yes do think about it. As for me the girl is equivalent to the figure of Christ who sacrificed her life to bring an awakening and hope. Lets try our best to not let this awakening fade out. She died and many of us will in the same way if we don't change our perspectives and thoughts. And like Gandhi said " be the change you wish to see in the world".
