How small are we?
Human beings have risen up to the top of every food chain in every ecosystem that they live in. Our world is a special planet that somehow has the right mix for a life among the other planets in our solar system. It is a small planet and there are planets that could fit a hundred earths in them. Our solar system is also huge when we look at the sheer sizes of planets and the sun, but the sun itself is a very average sized star and one could also call the sun a small –ish star.
So how is it that we have come to live on this wonderful
planet, well there are many answers but none are beyond questioning. When we
look up to the sky, we see a lot of stars. Researchers and astronomers have
found stars that can hold as many as a thousand suns too. The galaxy we live in
cant even be traversed horizontally or vertically by man in one single lifetime
even if we move as fast as light. So then how small are we really when looking
out into the night sky, let me tell you, we are nothing less than a speck of a
speck of dust and yet we are so very lucky to have the ability to think and the
ability to process thought.
We are small even on our home planet; many species of fish,
mammals and other organisms have the upper hand when it comes to size. But the
human has managed to colonize it and exploit in ways that our forefathers may
have never even dreamed of. Still we need to ask ourselves a few questions
every day.
·
How small are we? We are the incredibly small,
smaller than most atomic particles if we look at the whole universe as a giant
atom.
·
How small is our planet? It’s a small planet,
which got lucky. Probabilities have been on our side for a long time and here
we are today.
·
How much do we know about the world around us? This
is a very important question that everyone should dwell on. This is because we
are lost in a world that is not really our own. We don’t have time to say and
do things we like to and on top of all that, we don’t even know our own
country, our own land and our planet as much as we should.
Our uniqueness has always given us the advantage but now we
are squandering it all away in the name of progress and possession. We aren’t thankful
enough for this wonderful planet which is our home, small as it may be, it’s still
home and it’s still perfect.
We are no more than tiny ants when it comes to our planet,
just imagine if there was a giant somewhere looking at us with a microscope,
because that is how small we are.
In an age not far behind, there was inquisitiveness, an urge to know, not more than anybody else but to know more than yourself. Why is it not felt anymore?
