In the name of progress

The human race has made a lot of progress. Today our progress is measured on a scale of how much money we are ready to spend at whim. Our progress is measured by the LCD TV in our home and the number of horses on the cars that we own. We measure our individual progress and yet there are people who are denied even the most basic of the fruits of our so called progress. In our quest to conquer everything on this planet, we have come close to destroying the way of life that people have had for thousands of years.

In the name of progress, our cities grow larger every day; the migration to cities has become a worry in many areas of the planet as they have to clear up more and more lands to meet the demands of new houses, new factories and new cities. Every growing city spreads like rot in its surrounding areas, encroaching on habitat after habitat, displacing them from where they have been for thousands of years and more.

In the name of progress we are mass producing food and livestock in such a way that they are treated in the most barbaric ways possible. We have put in so many chemicals into our soils that they stand barren after one season; we have managed to put so much pressure on our lands that they are dwindling in their yields and we will soon come to a point where we may even have to manufacture farmland.

In the name of progress we have started wars and made innocent people suffer at the whim of a few. The wars of religion and region still plague lands in some parts of the world, blood is shed every day because some fanatic wants their way. Even the common man has hate and anger deep rooted in his soul, even the common man is not free from these horrific biases, ask yourself are you?

In the name of progress, we have come far from our humanity. We will squander away at a few minutes of pleasure what people don’t afford in a month and yet we are afraid to give back to our world even if so in the smallest ways possible. In the name of progress we are trying isolate ourselves from the world around us and move ahead. We think that we will progress if our family progresses but the entire world is our family and we must move together to be able to progress and survive.
